A look at some recent statistics from mobile advertising firm AdMob gives us a rough idea of how iPhone users are upgrading to the latest software. A few weeks after its release, only about a fourth of AdMob’s ad requests are coming from devices with iPhone OS 3.1 installed, though three quarters are running some 3.x variant. Requests from iPod touch users show that just over a third have updated to 3.x software, while over 90 percent of iPhone owners have done the same.

Sifting through a week’s worth of data from September 15 to September 22, AdMob compared the operating system of all iPhone OS devices, including all iPhone and iPod touch models. Of all the ad requests coming from iPhone OS devices, 51 percent were running iPhone OS 3.0.x, and 23 percent were running 3.1. Another 19 percent came from devices running 2.2.1, and 7 percent from 2.2 or earlier. Given that the majority of ad requests from iPhones come from applications, we’re making the assumption that the amount of requests coming from devices still running a 1.x version of iPhone OS is statistically insignificant.
